Tijdens een van mijn speurtochten op het Internet kwam ik terecht op deze website. Het is een enorme databank met songteksten enerzijds, en vertalingen naar het Nederlands anderzijds. Uit een hele resem voorbeelden blijkt hoe moeilijk het is om songteksten te vertalen. Niet alleen moet er rekening gehouden worden met ritme en gevoel maar ook met het rijmschema dat zo goed als onmogelijk is om te herhalen in de vertaling.
Bovendien hebben songteksten vaak een dubbele bodem, een extra betekenis die in de brontekst al niet door iedereen begrepen wordt, en dan wordt het pas echt onmogelijk om de volledige inhoud weer te geven in een andere taal. We kunnen dit soort vertalingen dan ook het best vergelijken met de vertaling van poëzie, een exclusief ambacht dat slechts voor enkelen is weggelegd.
Deze website is natuurlijk meer op ontspanning gericht dan academische analyse, en slaagt dan ook enigszins in zijn opzet. U kan er een aangenaam moment beleven door op zoek te gaan naar een (poging tot) vertaling van uw favoriete anderstalige liedjes.
